This 80-acre retreat is fun for all ages. Wilderness Lakes is known for its fishing and forits family atmosphere. Stocked canals weave throughout the preserve.You can catch catfish right from your campsite, feed the numerous ducks, or play a round of miniature golf.

Within 10 miles of the preserve there are five challenging golf courses. Many Southern California attractions are within a 90-minute drive, including the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Knott's Berry Farm, Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and Disneyland.

Pacific City Preserve

We had an average of 4-6 rabbits of varying ages and at least 5 Chipmunks, who lived in the bushes next to our campsite. There was a briarpatch amoung the bushes with blackberries on them. They had eaten all those they could reach so Nadine began pulling berries off the higher brambles to feed them. In days she had them eating out of her hands. They loved the carrots which were a treat they normally did not get.

Palm Springs Area

The Cahuilla Indians live in the area now Palm Springs. Itis composed of several small groups of Indians who were living in themodern day Palm Springs area when the Reservation wasestablished by the US in 1896. Archaeologicalresearch has shown that the Cahuillahave lived in the area for the past 350-500 years.

The reservationoccupies 32,000 acres (130 km²), of which 6,700 acres (27 km²) liewithin the city limits, making the Agua Caliente band the city'slargest landowner. Tribalenrollment is currently estimated at between 296 and 365 people.

Spanish explorers named the area "Agua Caliente" (hot water). Analternative use of palm is revealed in the November 1992 issue of Art of California. At least one Spanish explorer referred to the area as la Palma de la Mano de diosor "The Palm of God's hand,".

The current name for the areais "Palm Springs" which likely came into common usage in the mid-1860swhen the land was first surveyed by Government surveyors who notedthat a local mineral spring was located at the base of “two bunches ofpalms". By 1884 when attorney John Guthrie McCallum settled in Palm Springs, the name was already in wide acceptance.
